I read this book back in 1987 and it was amazing then but I read it again last month and it chilled me to the bone. The events leading up to the nuclear war and the actual attack and aftermath are so vivid that it literally gave me nightmares. Some things are out of date, but the story itself rings true.
Following the characters as they navigate the “new world” is riveting. The years after the destruction show how some people become power hungry and evil, others become hopeless and isolated and then there Swan, Sister and Josh who give you hope for the future.
The losses break my heart, every time a beloved character was lost I cried. Watching people choose to follow evil bullies through their greed, cowardice or fear broke my heart.
I will probably reread this book again, just as I have read Stephen King’s The Stand several times. Swan Song has been compared to The Stand in many reviews however I see them as very different stories. Both are Post Apocalyptic and good vs evil, but the journey isn’t the same and the characters are very different. I recommend both books!
Five + stars!!!
