By Elizabeth Horton-Newton

Riddle is a book I will re-read for sure. The story of a young woman who arrives in the town because her car breaks down. The mechanic promises to fix it but it will take some time. With money running out, and stranded for a time, Grace gets a job in a local restaurant across the street from the hotel where she’s staying.
At the same time, Kort is returning home after serving time in prison for murdering his girlfriend when he was in high school, a crime he insists he didn’t commit. His re-entry into the community is not an easy one and it becomes much more difficult when the murders start.
They meet by chance and fate keeps them running into each other. As she gets to know him, Grace believes Kort is innocent.
Kort is an indigenous man in a very white community. Adopted as a child by a white couple who tried to erase his heritage, Kort was abused as a child. He never fit in and was bullied at school. He was called rebellious, a problem, a hoodlum and ultimately a murderer.
This story addresses the forcible removal of Indigenous children from their homes to be placed in foster care or to be adopted by white families. Many of them never knew who their real families were.
This book has some unexpected twists and turns and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page. I plan to reread it very soon.
I give this book five stars for sure
